Pilgrimage route from Vézelay to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
The route via Vézelay is one of the classic French pilgrimage routes towards Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and further to Santiago de Compostela.
This road is known as the Voie de Vézelay or Via Lemovicensis.
From Vézelay the route immediately splits into two variants:
- a northern route via Bourges
- a southern route via Nevers (the route that passes Le Chemin)
It’s a peaceful and authentic pilgrimage route through the heart of rural France. Many pilgrims appreciate the tranquility and the spontaneous hospitality along the way.
Tour de Vézelay
The Tour de Vézelay is a beautiful circular walk of approximately 135 kilometers, returning to Vézelay. Our gîte is located directly on this route, as are several shorter alternatives.
It is an ideal walk for pilgrims who do not wish to make a long journey to Santiago, but who still want to experience the atmosphere of pilgrimage.
Cycling route: Along Old Roads
For cyclists, the well-known route “Along Old Roads and Pilgrimage Towns” runs near Vézelay. This long-distance cycle route begins in Maastricht and travels through the Ardennes and central France to Oloron-Sainte-Marie, where it connects with the St. James Cycle Route to Santiago.
Many cyclists visit Vézelay or stay overnight there, and then continue along Le Chemin towards Corbigny and further south.
Routes to Le Puy, Taizé, Cluny and Assisi
Pilgrims who walk via Vézelay to Le Puy-en-Velay, Taizé, Cluny or even Assisi also pass along Le Chemin or can easily connect to the route.
From Vézelay, follow the Pilgrim’s Way to Le Chemin.
You can then continue via Brassy towards Lac des Settons to connect to:
- the GR 13 → towards Le Puy-en-Velay
- the Chemin d’Assise → towards Taizé, Cluny and Assisi
