What is donativo?

At Gîte Pèlerin – Le Chemin, like many pilgrim hostels, we operate on a donation basis. This means you don’t pay a fixed price, but instead give what you can at the time.

The word donativo comes from Spanish and means gift. It’s a centuries-old tradition along the pilgrimage routes: pilgrims contribute according to their ability, so that everyone—regardless of budget—can find a place to rest and recharge along the way.

Why do we work with donativo?

It is our wish that this hostel remains accessible to all pilgrims, including those on longer journeys or with a more limited budget. Donativo makes this possible: some pilgrims give a little more, others a little less, and together we keep this place going.

Although we, as managers and volunteers, work without compensation, there are of course costs for keeping the gîte running: think of energy, food, maintenance and daily facilities.

What is an appropriate contribution?

To give you an idea of the cost of one night’s accommodation with dinner and breakfast:

  • €25–€30 → this will cover approximately the expenses
  • More than €30 → this helps pilgrims who are less able to contribute
  • Less than €25 → give what feels appropriate for your situation

Extras such as drinks, lunch or transportation are paid separately.

Thank you

With your donativo, you contribute not only to your own stay, but also to the hospitality of the pilgrims who come after you.

It’s a small gesture, but with great meaning.
